I started out as a musician. I played upright bass in some jazz groups. Some of my happiest moments. The collective energy when we were on that day was exhilarating. Also at the time when I was starting out I started to become obsessed with the works of Eroll Morris and Frederick Wiseman, and the Czech New Wave, American New Wave, French and German new wave. A lot of new waves. A naturalistic, energetic, and freeing form of filmmaking. I stopped playing music and focused on cinematography. Maybe bringing this style with me.
I like to think of my camera movement as trying to link into the energy of the person I am filming. Whether an artist, dancer, boxer, city, or person crossing the street, I like to mirror their natural rhythm and movement. Later I combined this with lighting and appreciating the natural fall off in a room as well as the creation of light and shadow and color to express mood.
Currently I am a director of photography who works in the commercial, narrative, and documentary worlds. I bring everything that I am to each shoot. And I work tirelessly and without concern for myself to help my director's vision.
I have collaborated with amazing directors including Spike Jonze, Ross Kauffman, Gillian Robespierre, Ross Kaufman, John X. Carey, Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman, Michelle Handelman, Eliot Rausch, Anthony Giacchino, Jeffrey Karoff, Cynthia Wade, Tracy Tragos, Kief Davidson, Tyler Manson, Lily Frances Henderson, and Jeremiah Zagar.
And I have also worked with some amazing producers. If you are a producer reading this, I love you very much. You guys do so much of the behind-the-scenes grunt work that ensures the director gets to fulfill their vision and hire me for work.
And of course I owe an incredible amount of gratitude to the editors who edit my work as well as the colorists who work miracles. And the vision the gaffer and key grip bring, beyond what I can think. And my ACs who are also forced to laugh at my jokes.
My production company, Kitty Guerrilla Films won the 2015 Primetime Emmy for "Remembering 9/11" directed by Sean Kennedy, made for the History Channel.
My work has screened at the Sundance Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival.
I have lensed films and commercials that have won Primetime Emmys and the Grand Prix and Palme d’Or at Cannes. I strive to bring honesty and emotion to the people I film. I have shot spots for Amex, Nike, Dove, Levi’s, Coach, GMC, Ford, BMW, Samsung, Verizon, Uber, Bank of America, Uniqlo, Citibank, and Planned Parenthood
Social justice is a passion of mine. I love working on projects and lending equipment for films that help to inspire and give a voice to the voiceless.
I also have two three-year-old twin boys that I absolutely adore, and are quickly turning into my gaffer and key grip. They just learned the word, "speedrail".
I'm in the local 600. I also like to work on all projects, no matter how big or small. Drop me an email.
